Judges and Exhibitors Course
Course
Content.
The two-day
course will cover the basic principles of judging and will
give the newer judge and those on, or looking to be included
on, their breed clubs' 'C’-list of judges, the basic
knowledge from which to progress to championship level. It
will also give the newer exhibitors an insight into what judges
are looking for in order to understand why certain dogs are
regularly placed.
Theory
The first
module will cover the art of judging, running the ring, KC
Regulations, Judges’ & Stewards’ paperwork,
stewards, dress code, ring behaviour and equipment.
Practical
The final
module will cover movement & conformation, interpreting
the breed standard, examining the exhibits, handling nervousness,
writing the critique, getting judging appointments and judging
contracts. There will also be the opportunity to gain ‘handles-on’
experience of assessing exhibits.
Learning
Outcomes
After
the first day the students will be understand the art of judging,
know how to run a ring. Students will be conversant with all
the KC Regulations governing judges and stewards, be able
to complete the Judges’ & Stewards’ paperwork,
know how to deal with stewards and know what is the expected
dress code.
Assessment
Criteria
At the
end of the first day delegates will be assessed on their knowledge
of KC Regulations governing judges and stewards.
The second
day will show the delegates correct movement & construction.
They will be able to interpret the breed standard, be confident
about examine the exhibits and making their choice of Best
of Breed. They will learn about writing the critique, getting
judging appointments and the KC requirements regarding judging
contracts. They will also be aware of techniques to handle
nervousness.
Pre-Course
Work
Before
the practical module of the course delegates will be sent
pictures of dogs, which they will be asked to critique before
they attend. They will also be asked to write a critique for
a class at one of their breed shows.
Assessment
Criteria
At the
end of the second day delegates will be assessed on their
knowledge of canine anatomy, canine terms and their ability
to write critiques.
Tutor
Information
Ken Humphries
is Secretary of the Midland & West of England GDC and
serving member of the committee of the National Working &
Pastoral Breeds Society. He has been judging since 1978 and
first awarded CCs in 1988. He is frequently asked to judge
other working group breeds as well as Groups and BIS.
He has
been running training courses for judges and stewards since
1990 and runs the Midland & West of England GDC Judging
Assessment Day for judges wishing to upgrade to the Club’s
A3-list.
He is
currently the trainer for the training nights run by Newport
(Gwent) CS.
